WOMEN are flexing their purchasing power as new research reveals that the average British female spends over £2,200 on sunglasses in a lifetime, owning as many as 42 pairs of shades.

The study found that nearly half of all women (40 per cent) own up to four pairs of sunglasses at any given time, splashing in excess of £250 a go.

According to the study, 21 per cent of women now purchase a new pair of sunglasses every year – that’s nearly 4 million pairs – with one in ten (8 per cent) of those polled happily admitting that they spend a considerable amount of money and a fifth (21 per cent) naming them their top summer essential purchase.
