MSFT CEO selection process: 4-6 months

People familiar with the board’s thinking said directors aren’t necessarily leaning toward a visionary-style leader. Directors are conscious that the next CEO must be able to manage a 100,000-employee company with a broader mix of businesses than most tech companies, one of the people said. Directors hope to select a CEO in about four to six months, people familiar with board deliberations said. The company has said Mr. Ballmer will retire within a year, or when the board picks his successor.
